Baruch de Spinoza was a Dutch philosopher from a Sephardi family originating in Portugal. His radical ideas brought him into conflict with the Jewish Community of Amsterdam and he was excommunicated in 1656.

His philosophical works assured him a lasting fame and he was shown on the banknote of the Netherlands in 1972.
