NIELS BOHR

1868 – 1943

The small country of Denmark has honored the half-Jewish physicist NIELS BOHR on multiple stamp issues as well as on 500 kroner bank notes. Bohr was one of the most famous nuclear scientists and was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1922 for his studies of atomic structure and radiation.

During WWII he helped in the evacuation of Danish Jews to neutral Sweden. He spent the war years in the United States, where he was involved with the Manhattan project in New Mexico.
