Israel’s First Stamps On Presentation Sheet

A Brief Overview of Holy Land Philately, Part 3. The Israel Philatelist. Summer 2017. Sid Morginstin. p. 18.

“New stamps are frequently mounted on specially-printed, often decorative paper, cancelled on the day of issue, and presented as official gifts of the State to government ministers and foreign diplomats. These articles are known as Minister Sheets.”

STATIONARY ISSUES

1952-1954 Flying Stag Airletter Sheet

“Israel has also issued stationery (Figure 69). These include air letter sheets, postal cards, picture postal cards, and envelopes. I wrote a book on the subject many years ago. It is in desperate need of an update which I am now in the process of re-writing.”

MAXIMUM CARD

Tribes

“The formal definition of a MAXIMUM CARD traditionally has been a picture post card that reproduces the design of the stamp and with the stamp affixed and tied by the first day of issue postmark. For the purposes of this listing, a very lenient definition was taken – as long as the design on the card is related to the stamp and tied by a first day cancel, the card will be listed. Sometimes, an additional stamp is on the back. This was probably done to meet the postal fees for a card.”
“MAXIMUM CARDS were also issued for some special occasions. The date may not have been the first day of issue for the stamp. In order to have a more complete listing of the cards, these are presented in the EXCEL SPREADSHEET named “MAXIMUM CARDS SPECIAL OCCASIONS”. Note that some were available with and/or without tabs. These are not specified in the listing. MAXIMUM CARDS were also made for Post Office Openings. Please see that section for a full discussion.”

STAMP INFORMATION FOLDERS

Festival Stamps 5729 (1968)
FORMAT A

“STAMP INFORMATION FOLDERS are provided free of charge to subscribers to the philatelic service. Except for the early 100 or so, these should be readily available.
STAMP INFORMATION FOLDERS contain basic information about the stamp or stamps that were issued. The text is in Hebrew and English.
The earliest known is for BALE 0171-0173, the 1959 New Year. Some of the early ones and a few others do not have numbers. On occasion, a number was reused or the wrong number was used. These are explained in the FOLDER NOTES.
At times, more than one issue was described in a folder. In these cases, the information is shown once for each issue. It is recommended that two be collected – one for each issue. As an example, please see 0073/0074 and 0075 (BALE numbers 0372-0374 and 0375).
Folders were NOT issued for definitive stamps, such as Seven Species, Stand Byes, and Herzl nor for many souvenir sheets. For some series, the folder depicted two or three of the stamps on the cover and showed others inside.”

STAMP INFORMATION BULLETINS

Bulletin No. 12
ENGLISH EDITION
HAKIRYA, 13.11.49
(FORMAT A1)

“STAMP INFORMATION BULLETINS are hard to come by. The listing contains just those in the authors’ holdings. In fact, after the September1990 issues (bulletin number 514), Bernard Perrin and I have not seen any.
The date on the bulletin is the date that the bulletin was issued. It is NOT the date of issue.”

POST OFFICE OPENINGS

1948 OPENING

“The listings are based upon the material seen by the authors.
Various stamps could have been used. Most likely the earlier openings have the definitive issues available at the time.
The postmarks usually are well struck.
The cover may be addressed.
The cachet may come in various shades of the color noted. The envelope may also be in different colors. Some of these are delineated in the NOTES column. The word NONE implies a blank envelope.
The listings also have some entries for NEW CANCELS. Other than the text, they are indistinguishable from the openings. Howard Chapman reported 16 NEW CANCELS all dated 1951-08-01 and all without a cachet. He also reported that as of September 2, 1951, the new cancels are on Israel Postal Service envelopes with the embossed stag (like the one in the photo labeled 1967 BLUE LOGO). These are in the “THRU 1959” tab.
After 1959, there are many un-cachet and/or cachet covers with just a postmark of the date that the post office opened. The cachet is similar to the blue flying stag. We decided not to list these.”

The Israeli – Palestinian Conflict
(Balfour Declaration Centennial (Scott, Israel 2156)

As one can see, the list of the Arab reaction to the Balfour Declaration and the origin of the Israel – Palestine conflict is very long (A full list of the Israel Palestine conflict events can be found at https://worldhistoryproject.org/topics/israeli-palestinian-conflict [Editor’s Note: fixed typo in email address].
