Interim Period I

STAMPS

[Ed. The first set of British stamps for Palestine are commonly referred to as the “BLUES.” Instead of a country name, EEF (Egyptian Expeditionary Force) was used]

The first set of British stamps for Palestine was the one piastre indigo or deep blue stamp for use on overseas letters (Palestine no 1) and was issued on February 10, 1918. On February 16, 1918, the 5 milliemes cobalt blue stamp for post cards and internal letters was issued. These stamps were issued ungumed and were used on prepaid civilian mail.

They were followed on March 5, 1918, by Palestine No. 3 (one piastre ultramarine) and No. 4 (5 milliemes ultramarine), and both were gummed stamps. I have used Bale/Gibbons catalog numbers. [Ed. Also on “PREPAID CIVILIAN MAIL” web page.]
